Merry Christmas from Pastor Bob

“‘And so, this is Christmas,’” in the musical words of John Lennon. This is a simple story that we have heard our whole lives. And now it is before us. The mysterious pregnancy, the labored journey to Bethlehem, the star, the stable, the myriad angels in the blazing sky, the haste of the shepherds discovering the newborn, and the broad proclamation that from this inauspicious place everything in the whole world had changed. It is all because this event more than any other event since the creation of the world has made a difference for you and me. Despite the immensity of the universe of stars, galaxies and planets in their courses God coming to us in the birth of a baby has shown that God is with us. God knows the experience of our humanity, the ups and downs, the triumphs and travails of life. And so, whatever the joys or sorrows of our lives, God has been there. God is with us, and God will continue to be with us, throughout this life and beyond.

Joy to the world; Merry Christmas!

White Gifts for December 18th

Dear Friends,

It is the tradition at St. Mark’s for the congregation to bring gifts wrapped in white for the children to present at the pageant.

This year the pageant will take place at our December 18th morning worship.

The gifts will be donated to the Martin Luther King Head Start program. They have requested educational games and puzzles. The program services children ages 3-5 free of charge in Rockville Centre and surrounding communities. They currently service 28 children and families who are in great need (15 girls and 13 boys).

Please plan to bring a “White Gift” to church on Sunday morning December 18th (or drop it off at the office earlier) to help us contribute to this worthwhile program.

Thank you.

Grace & peace
Pastor Bob

Advent Study 2016

Dear friends,

Advent is a week from this Sunday. Please consider joining our study group.

Below is a brief synopsis of the material.

We will be meeting in the parsonage to share refreshments and fellowship as we engage in the the study.

Please email me if you would like to join and I will provide the study booklet.

See you soon!

Advent Study begins Sunday evening November 20, 7:00 in the parsonage.

Christmas or confusion, Bethlehem or bedlam . . . Which will you choose this year?
The truth is, we don’t have to choose, because Christmas always happens right in the midst of our confusion.

God breaks into our confusion and is made known in Jesus Christ. Christmas and confusion–weren’t they intimately related at the first Christmas when Jesus was born?
Sometimes we forget that. But, that’s what this study is about–how Christ breaks into our chaos and confusion and brings Christmas–how Bethlehem always happens in the midst of bedlam.

This thematic Advent study has five sessions–one for each Sunday of Advent and one for Christmas.

Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion, a brief prayer, a focus for the week, and six daily Bible readings for personal devotional time during the week.
